That Mindfield

My first attempt at independent publishing was also my first (1994) full collection of poems. When I started writing I was not at all drawn to poetry. Something happened along the way, and this little book that I call Mindfield came out of that transition. I think my poetry has grown a lot since then, but I am still willing to share from those early ones.

Here’s the poem that gave the book its title:

Don’t They?

They leap into the mind, don’t they,
Flailing ghosts and flapping phantoms,
Veterans of the broomstick, screeching

It’s awfully scary, some parts dreary,
Where fear can’t cripple boredom maims
The foolhardy attempting to trek across

The open plains of the mind; so many
Eerie voices counsel don’t walk, a pace so brisk,
Don’t climb, an aim so high, don’t reach

A dream so far, but braves cross the valley
Where others dare them not, and find
The witches screaming caution are placed

To weed the weak, they who have never trod
The mindfield are merely bitter when you do
The edge and back, because they are not you.
