The cherished two

I mentioned in a previous post two poems I wrote in my transition phase from childhood scribbles to a more mature adult voice. These remain very dear to me.  They were published in my first independent collection and also in anthologies edited by others. I shared one, Life Is, yesterday. Meanwhile is the second of these two cherished poems.

Meanwhile, weeds sprout hope
On the arid earth
Where we once stood
And buried a romance
Under mounds of goodbyes,
And grow, and nourish
On the remnants
Of that antique
Of our race, love,
And die.

Meanwhile, I stroll
With silent time
Through cities,
Shopping for companions,
Gazing through cold
Snooty show windows,
Loneliness mirrored
In their mocking glass,
Haunting me.

Meanwhile, I wonder
How my heart would race
The mute time
If I suddenly saw you
In the crowd,
Perhaps like…

We were before,
I remember
Young, hermit crabs
Feeling cautiously,
Slowly, timid snails
Withdrawing sharply
Each time we touched
Too deep.
