Edge Of A World

There’s and old man

Piercing through my mask

With a toothless smile

At the edge of the world.

His barren mouth

Shapes a greeting

Swallows my confidence

Into a pit of wisdom.

An ageless face,

Knowing sunken eyes

Spotlights my wretchedness,

Elegies scribbled on his wrinkles.

I am walking beyond the setting sun

At the curve of one world,

Looking for the kindling flame

Of your passion

In the embers of his eyes.

At the edge of my world

There’s a stranger

Offering kindness, I turn away rudely

Because all I want my all

Is the charitable portions of your courting.

Those were the days…being young, foolish and foolishly in love. I am having quite the time going through the writings and emotions of my youth. When I started college I began writing poetry quite intensely. The above is from that time – I would have been 17 or 18 –  I guess an age of acquiring serious boyfriend and major love issues. That poem did go through a couple of rewrites; I included it in a collection that won me my first poetry award (I was in the region of 25 at the time). It’s a “work unprogressed.” (You should know by now I make up words and phrases as I need them.) I have not really engaged with that poem since those days. Enjoy my young heart.
