Virtuous or cowardly?

I said, I will watch how I behave and not let my tongue lead me into sin; I will keep a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked man is near me, I stayed dumb, silent, speechless…

From  a book of the Bible, some scripture on Sunday to ponder in preparation for battle with the week ahead. Dedicated to persecuted writers everywhere.

Here’s an old poem of mine touching on the theme of silence.

Suddenly Silent

I will remain silent

Until I have learned to speak

A tongue grown and cured.

For when I brag to friends

That I’m six feet going on taller

And my heel breaks

In their sight

I am diminished; it pains for me to

Strain on tiptoe to appear upright.

Fallen and near finished

When I can no longer rise to

Full height, image truly tarnished

I crumple beneath the weight

Of hollow boasting, landing heavy and

Humbling; all said now feared.

Noise turns to quiet poise,

Speechless a sweet repose

Because growing and knowing

Make the self go

Suddenly silent.
