The Last Poem

It was for you, now

I’ll never write again.

The last poem

Was wine – ageing,

Waiting for healing,

When your hands of solace

Squeeze from me

The final verse,

For you

Now, you are gone.

I fought the fiends of Hades

To hold you but you went alone

Through a cellar of stillness,

Resounding silence of your footsteps

In the spaces where we roamed

I seek your voice in recitations of

The last poem.

With my armour,

Faith and poetry,

I conquer space to write for you,

Annex new words to talk to you,

Push back frontiers of eloquence;

The words now gall

And wormwood on my tongue,

I’ll never write again.

But while I mused,

Paper mated with pen

And gave birth

To this poem.
