A poem I like

I am sure almost every person who was schooled in the English-speaking (formerly British empire outpost) Caribbean post statehood or independence at some point had to learn Evan Jones‘ poem “The Song of The Banana Man.”  (Scroll down link to get the poem).

I have a lesser known Evan Jones poem I like more – discovered it in a Barbadian magazine of art and literature in my early undergraduate years. Goodnight blogdom/blogosphere – sharing this with you and hoping it will help you have a chill weekend.

By Evan Jones

Man sitting still

shadow in the shadow of

the fig tree,

man with no defence

against eternity.

Beyond the hill

out to see

sky rising, earth-covering

pillars of cloud

pillars of fire,

an angel painting of

his great desire.

To that still man

wise enough not to know

wise not to care

which way the earth is rolling

or what time it is,

it is all glory,  all of it.

There is no other world but beauty

and no difference

between the sunset and the dawn.
